Easy Ways Of Controlling Urinary Incontinence

By Enid Hinton

Losing control of your bladder is what specialists refer to as urinary incontinence. It manifests as either frequent leakages or total lack of control. Depending on the factors behind the failure, it is considered temporally or chronic. The degree of severity will determine the measures taken in controlling urinary incontinence. The options available are listed below.

Exercises- the exercises can be used by both men and women regardless of their age. They are aimed at strengthening pelvic floor muscles which support and hold your bladder. Weakness of these muscles is the main cause of leakage. The exercise involves pretending to stop urine flow by pulling in and squeezing those muscles for up to ten minutes. This routine is repeated about ten times in a day.

Exercises take time to deliver results, just like physical fitness. The least time you can expect to see results is six weeks. This should not be a reason to stop exercising. The exercises can be performed anywhere including public places. The beauty of it is that no one knows you are exercising.

Habitual visits to the bathroom- you are required to set the time you will be relieving your bladder. This works by building a natural schedule that will be recognized by the brain. It retrains the bladder to release urine at a certain time.

Quit smoking and loose weight- Weight is considered a contributor to the incontinence. Smokers also are on the high risk end of developing this condition. Doctors recommend that by reducing your weight and giving-up the puff, you will regain control of your bladder and the comfort that comes with it.

Keep off alcohol and caffeine blended products- alcohol causes muscles surrounding the bladder to weaken and so does caffeine. Once you have identified these catalysts, it is advisable to avoid them. Alcohol might also hinder the transfer of signal to the brain that the bladder is full. It will be tool late by the time you get to the toilet.

Medication- There are excellent medical remedies for the different manifestations of this condition. It takes correct diagnosis for the physician to recommend the right medication. The diagnosis should establish if the cause is alcohol, pregnancy, age, smoking or obesity before prescribing any medicine.

Diagnosis is a challenge considering that there are several possible causes of the urinary incontinence. The doctor will require a patient to keep a diary and record all fluid consumed, frequency and the number of times he or she looses control of the bladder. Ultra sound and physical examinations are also carried out.

There are secondary symptoms to this condition. The most common are skin infections. They result from dampness of the pelvic area which extends for several hours in a day. You also are at risk of urinary track infections.

It is important to note that all forms of urinary incontinence are manageable. It does not matter whether it is stress, urge or overflow related. A large population suffers from this condition and is thus not a cause for embarrassment. Mild cases are pretty simple to manage. There are products designed for such conditions including special under wears. Exercises also go a long way while the ultimate solution lies with your doctor.
