Vein Treatment For Varicose Veins

By Freida Michael

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that appear on the legs or feet. The main aim of vein treatment Austin, TX are to get rid of symptoms and improve the look and appearance of veins. The National Institutes of Health says that around 60% of people suffer from varicose veins at one point. It is more common in women.

Varicose veins are caused by a lack of blood flow in the veins between the leg and the heart. This is caused because the valves that are responsible for keeping blood flowing to the heart are not working the right way. This causes blood to flow backwards, making it pool in the veins.

With medical procedures, varicose veins can be closed or removed. Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which liquid chemical is injected into veins, closing them. The injections are done every 2 to 4 weeks, or until there is improvement. Another method is microsclerotherapy. This is also a chemical injection. This is a treatment that is normally done with spider veins that are not as severe.

Laser surgery or endovenous ablation use lasers to close off a vein. The heat from the laser light make the vein go away. Vein stripping and ligation involve cutting your skin open to remove the vein. It is usually only done for the most severe cases of varicose veins.

Side effects for medical treatments include slight discomfort, bruising, skin discoloration and swelling. Less common and more severe side effects include scarring and blood clotting. Severe side effects are more common in vein stripping and ligation. Usually, you will only experience minor side effects. Lifestyle changes can improve varicose veins. This is a good option if your varicose veins are not too severe and symptoms are few. You may just need lifestyle changes instead of other medical procedures.

Physical exercise can help blood move through your veins. Do some simple muscle toning and leg exercises to improve your muscles. Do not stand for long periods of time. Also avoid sitting for a long time and try not to cross your legs. If it is possible, you want to keep your legs raised above your heart to increase blood flow. Eat healthy and make good lifestyle changes. Losing weight, if you are obese, can benefit your health.

Tight clothes, especially tight clothes around your thighs or legs, can be bad for varicose veins. Choose more loose fitted clothing that lets your body breathe and will not make varicose veins worse. Avoid high heels and choose low heeled shoes which will help tone calf muscles.

Compression stockings are another good option for clothing. They give your legs a gently pressure, offering more pressure than support pantyhose. You will need to be fitted specially for compression stockings. You can find them at medical supplies stores, or at pharmacies.

Choosing how you deal with varicose veins is entirely up to you. Treatments can be used to improve how veins look. While treatments help with the healing of varicose veins, it does not necessarily mean new ones will not form. If you are not sure what the best option is for you, talk to your doctor.
